What is the etiquette for a same-sex wedding invitation?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests · For parents

Short answer

There is no special etiquette rule for same-sex wedding invitations. Treat them the same as any other wedding invitation, listing both partners' names equally and using whichever titles or wording you both prefer.

The most important thing is that the invitation feels like you. You can put either name first, or list them side by side, or use a shared surname. There is no correct order, so choose what sounds best to you. Titles are entirely your choice. You might use Mr and Mr, Ms and Ms, Mx and Mx, or no titles at all. If one partner prefers a title and the other does not, that is fine too. Host lines can name your families, both partners, or just say who is inviting the guest. For example, you could write "Together with their families" or list each set of parents. Keep the wording inclusive for guests too. Avoid phrases that assume a bride and groom, such as "the bride and groom". Instead use "the couple", "the newlyweds", or "us". If you are hosting a separate hen and stag party, you can mention them without implying traditional roles. Send invitations about six to eight weeks before the wedding, and make sure the RSVP details match the events you are inviting people to. If you are unsure, ask a close friend or family member to read it and tell you how it feels.
