Who puts Haldi on bride first?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For brides · For parents

Short answer

Usually the bride's female relatives and friends apply the Haldi paste first, though roles vary by family and region. There is no legal rule, so families decide what feels right for them.

In most Hindu families, the Haldi ceremony is a women-led event. The bride's mother, grandmothers, aunts and close female friends typically begin by applying the turmeric paste to her face and arms. This is a loving ritual, not a strict rule. Some families let the bride's sisters start, while others invite all the women present to take a turn.

Men often join later, or attend a separate Haldi for the groom. The groom's side may have their own ceremony at a different time and place. What matters most is that everyone who wants to take part can do so.

If your family follows a specific tradition, ask the elders how they usually do it. You can also adapt the order to suit your household. There is no legal requirement for who applies the paste, and no religious authority that decides this for you. Check with your place of worship or family priest if you want to follow a particular custom closely.
