Can you have an African wedding in the UK and what are the legal requirements?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Yes, you can absolutely have an African wedding in the UK. The cultural ceremony can be full of African traditions, but the legal marriage must follow the rules of the country where you live, usually at a register office or approved venue.

Many couples in the UK celebrate both a cultural African ceremony and a legal marriage. Your cultural celebration can include traditional dress, music, food, dances and the bride price, and it can take place in a community hall, church, hotel or outdoor space. This part is about your families and your heritage.

The legal part is separate and must follow the law. In England and Wales, you need to give notice at your local register office at least 28 days before the ceremony. Both partners must attend in person, and you usually need to have lived in the district for at least the last seven days. You then need two witnesses at the ceremony. The legal ceremony can take place at a register office, an approved venue or a religious building registered for marriages.

In Scotland, you submit a marriage notice to the registrar for the district where the wedding will take place, at least 29 days before. Weddings can happen almost anywhere agreed with the registrar. In Northern Ireland, notice is given at least 28 days before the wedding. Humanist weddings can be legally binding in Northern Ireland, and humanist ceremonies are not legally binding on their own in England and Wales, so couples usually add a civil ceremony. If you are unsure about your own situation, check GOV.UK, the register office or your place of worship.
