What should I ask a wedding venue about the weather and outdoor ceremonies?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party

Short answer

Ask whether the venue has a clear indoor backup plan for outdoor ceremonies, and whether that plan is confirmed in writing. Also ask what happens if it rains on the day, and whether outdoor areas are covered or heated.

Ask the venue whether they offer outdoor ceremonies and, if so, what their weather contingency plan is. Ask whether the backup space is indoors or under a marquee, and whether it is the same size as the outdoor space. Ask if you can see the backup space during your visit, not just hear about it.

Ask what happens if the weather turns during the ceremony. Is there a decision point, and who makes the call? Ask whether the venue provides umbrellas, heaters, or blankets for guests. Ask whether outdoor areas have a hard floor or grass, and whether the grass is likely to be muddy after rain. Ask whether there is a covered walkway between the ceremony and the reception.

Ask about the legal side. In England and Wales, outdoor ceremonies are only allowed at approved venues with a licence, and the registrar must agree to the location. Ask the venue whether their licence covers the outdoor spot you like, and whether they have held outdoor ceremonies there before. Ask what happens if the registrar refuses on the day due to weather. Finally, ask whether the backup plan affects your booking fee or any additional costs.
