What should I ask a wedding venue about insurance and licenses?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Ask what public liability insurance the venue holds, whether you need your own event insurance, and which licenses they have for alcohol, music and late hours.

First, ask for proof of the venue's public liability insurance and check what it covers, such as accidents in the building or grounds. Ask if you need to take out your own event insurance, especially for cancellation, damage or supplier issues. Then ask about licenses. The venue should have a premises licence for selling alcohol, and you should ask whether you can bring your own drinks and if there is a corkage fee. Ask if they have a music licence for live and recorded music, and whether this covers your DJ or band. Ask about their late night refreshment licence if your wedding goes on past 11pm, and whether there are restrictions on serving alcohol after a certain time. Ask if they have a licence for outdoor ceremonies or receptions, and whether fireworks or sparklers are allowed under their insurance. Also ask about fire safety, including how many guests are allowed and where fire exits are. If you are unsure about anything, check with your local council or GOV.UK for current rules.
