Short answer
Yes, you can have a marquee wedding in winter in the UK, but it takes careful planning. You will need proper heating, lighting, flooring and weatherproofing, plus a backup plan for storms. Check your venue’s licence and local rules before you book.
Winter marquee weddings are possible and can be wonderfully cosy, but they are not the same as a summer tent. The main work is keeping everyone warm and dry. You will need a strong, insulated marquee with a solid floor, and heating that is safe, quiet and powerful enough for the space. Think about where the heat goes: doorways and gaps let cold air in, so ask your marquee supplier about draft-proofing and double-lined walls.
Lighting matters too, because winter days are short. Plan for warm, bright lighting for the ceremony and reception, and consider extra lighting outside for paths, car parks and the entrance. You also need a weather plan. Strong winds, rain or snow can delay setup or make access tricky, so agree with your suppliers what happens if the weather turns. Have a clear, dry walkway from the car park to the tent, and maybe a covered porch area for guests arriving.
Legally, a civil ceremony in a marquee is not automatically allowed. The marquee must be at an approved venue or within the grounds of one, and the registrar must agree. Check with the venue and the local register office early. For religious ceremonies, ask your place of worship about their rules. If your ceremony is not legal on its own, you can have a short legal ceremony elsewhere and a blessing or celebration in the marquee.
Finally, think about comfort. Provide warm drinks on arrival, a cloakroom for coats, and plenty of space for guests to move around. With good heating, lighting and planning, a winter marquee wedding can feel intimate and memorable.
