What is the mother of the bride supposed to pay for?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For brides

Short answer

There is no rule. Traditionally in the UK the mother of the bride helped host the wedding, but today most couples pay themselves or share costs with both families. Whatever she offers, agree it clearly and kindly.

Old etiquette said the bride's family paid for most of the wedding, but that has not been the norm for decades. Now the mother of the bride might contribute towards the venue, the dress, the flowers, or a specific part like the cake or the music. Some mothers give a fixed sum, others pay for one item outright, and many give nothing at all. The important thing is to talk openly before any bookings are made. Ask her what she feels comfortable doing, and be clear about what would genuinely help you. If she offers to pay for something, confirm the exact amount or the exact item so there is no awkwardness later. Remember that family shapes vary: stepmothers, adoptive mothers and mothers-in-law may all be involved. No one should feel pressured by tradition. The only real rule is that everyone contributes what they can and want, without resentment. If money is tight, a heartfelt contribution of time, such as helping with planning or hosting a meal, is just as valuable.
