What is a good budget to have for a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

There is no single 'good' budget for a wedding. It depends on your income, savings, guest list, location, and what matters most to you. A good budget is one you can afford without debt or stress. Start with what you have, then decide what to prioritise.

People often ask what they should spend on a wedding, but there is no right answer. Weddings in the UK vary hugely in cost depending on where you live, how many guests you invite, and the season. A small ceremony in a register office with a meal afterwards costs far less than a large country house wedding. Both can be wonderful.

A good budget is one that fits your life. Look at your savings, your monthly income, and any contributions from family. Decide how much you are comfortable spending without borrowing or dipping into emergency funds. Then work backwards from that total.

Think about what matters most to you both. Maybe you want great food, or a brilliant band, or beautiful photos. Put your money there and cut back elsewhere. For example, a midweek wedding or a winter date can cost less than a Saturday in summer. A shorter guest list saves on catering, drinks, and stationery.

Remember that the legal part of the wedding is simple and can be done cheaply. You can always have a small legal ceremony and a bigger party later. The most important thing is that you start your marriage without money worries. That is the best budget of all.
