How can I save money on a wedding venue in the UK?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Choose a date outside peak season, such as a Friday or winter day, and ask about dry hire or midweek discounts. A simpler venue with fewer extras often costs far less.

The venue is usually the biggest cost, so flexibility on dates is your strongest saving. Saturdays in summer are the most expensive, so ask about Fridays, Sundays or winter months. Many venues offer lower rates for off-peak dates, and some let you hire the space without their catering or decor packages.

Look at venues that are not listed as wedding venues. Village halls, community centres, sports clubs, or a friend's large garden can be far cheaper, especially if you can bring your own food and drink. If you want a licensed venue, check that it is approved for civil ceremonies, or plan a short legal ceremony at a register office and hold the celebration elsewhere.

Ask what is included in the price. Some venues include tables, chairs, linens and basic lighting, while others charge extra for everything. Negotiate politely: ask if they can waive a corkage fee or include a free room for the night. Also consider a midweek wedding if your guests can manage it, as many venues drop prices sharply for weekdays.
