What makes a wedding dress expensive?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For brides

Short answer

A wedding dress becomes expensive because of the fabric, the labour, the design complexity and the brand. Silk, hand-stitched lace, corsetry and many layers of tulle all add cost. The designer's reputation and the shop's overheads also play a part.

The biggest cost driver is fabric. Silk, particularly silk duchess satin or silk organza, is far more expensive than polyester. Hand-embroidered lace, beading or sequins add hours of skilled work, and that labour is reflected in the price.

Construction matters too. A dress with a structured bodice, boning, a corset back or a full ballgown skirt requires more fabric and more time to sew. Hand-finished hems, French seams and hidden layers all push the price up.

Design complexity is another factor. A simple slip dress takes less material and fewer hours than a gown with a cathedral train, a hand-pleated skirt or a detachable overskirt. Custom sizing and multiple fittings also add to the final bill.

Brand and retail location play a role. A well-known designer charges more for their name, and a boutique on a high street has higher rent than a workshop. You are also paying for the shop's service, such as appointments, styling advice and alterations coordination.

Finally, scarcity matters. Limited edition fabrics or a one-off design will cost more than a mass-produced style. If you want a lower price, choose a simpler silhouette, avoid heavy embellishment and consider a less famous maker.
