What ring metal will not tarnish?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Platinum and palladium will not tarnish, and high-karat yellow gold is very resistant to tarnishing. Silver will tarnish over time and needs regular cleaning to keep its shine.

If you want a ring that stays bright with little care, platinum is the strongest answer. It is naturally white and does not react with air or moisture, so it never loses its colour. Palladium, a related metal, shares this quality and is a lighter, often more affordable option. Pure gold does not tarnish either, but it is too soft for a daily ring, so jewellers mix it with other metals. Yellow gold alloys are generally more resistant to tarnish than white gold, which often needs a rhodium coating to stay bright.

Silver is the metal most likely to develop a dark film. This is normal and can be polished away, but it does mean extra upkeep. Rose gold sits between the two, with copper giving it warmth and reasonable resistance. When choosing, think about how much maintenance you are happy to do. A ring you never take off deserves a metal that keeps up with that commitment. If you prefer silver for its look, just be ready to clean it occasionally.
