What should I expect at a wedding hair trial?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For brides

Short answer

Expect a consultation, then a full styling session that can take one to two hours. The stylist will discuss your dress, accessories and wedding theme, then create a style, and you will review it together.

Your trial usually starts with a chat. The stylist will ask about your dress, neckline, veil, headpiece, the formality of your wedding, and whether you are having photos indoors or outdoors. They will look at your hair type, length and condition, and may suggest adjustments to the photos you brought. Then they will wash, dry and style your hair, often using heat tools, pins and product. You will be able to see the result in a mirror from all angles, and you should speak up if anything feels too tight, too loose, too high or too low. The stylist may make small changes during the session, so the final look is something you both agree on. They will also show you how to keep the style in place, and may recommend products for the day. You will leave with your hair done, so plan your day accordingly. Some stylists take photos for their records, but you should take your own too. Finally, ask about timing for the wedding morning, and whether the stylist will come to you or you will go to them.
