What to wear to a wedding hair trial?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For brides

Short answer

Wear a top that buttons or zips at the front, so you can change clothes without disturbing your finished hair. Keep your neck and shoulders clear, and avoid high collars or hoods. Bring photos of styles you like, and wear your usual makeup or none at all.

Choose a button-up or zip-up top for your hair trial. This lets you get dressed and undressed without pulling anything over your head, which would ruin the style. A simple V-neck or scoop neck also shows the hairdresser exactly how the hair will sit against your neckline and shoulders.

Avoid wearing a hat, headband or heavy scarf, as these can leave dents or marks in the hair. If you usually wear glasses, bring your contact lenses or your frames so you can see the finished look properly. Keep your hair clean and dry unless your hairdresser has told you otherwise, and arrive with it in its natural state, not tied back tightly.

Bring a few photos of styles you like, but also be open to suggestions based on your face shape and the style of your wedding. If you plan to wear a veil, hairpiece or fresh flowers, bring those along too so the stylist can work with them. Wear a little makeup or none at all, so you can judge how the hair frames your face without distraction. Most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable in, and take a photo of the back of your head as well as the front, so you can see the full effect.
