What's smaller than a micro wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

A mini wedding, sometimes called an elopement or a two-person wedding, is smaller than a micro wedding. It usually involves just the couple, two witnesses, and possibly a photographer, with no other guests.

If a micro wedding typically has 20 to 30 guests, a mini wedding brings that right down. You might have just the two of you, your two legal witnesses, and perhaps a photographer or a close friend who acts as witness. Some couples call this an elopement, even if they are not travelling far. Others use the term "just us" wedding or a private ceremony.

In England and Wales, you still need two witnesses at the ceremony, so you cannot marry completely alone. In Scotland, you also need two witnesses aged 16 or over. The witnesses can be strangers, such as your registrar's staff, but most couples choose two trusted friends or family members. You can then hold a separate celebration later for a wider circle, with no legal ceremony attached.

A mini wedding is often about simplicity and focus. You might choose a beautiful outdoor spot in Scotland, where weddings can take place almost anywhere agreed with the registrar or celebrant. In England and Wales, the legal ceremony must happen at a register office, approved venue, or registered religious building. You can still have a symbolic vow exchange elsewhere afterwards, but the legal part must follow the rules. Check with your local register office for what is possible.
