What should a micro wedding schedule or timeline look like?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

A micro wedding timeline is shorter and more relaxed than a full wedding, often covering a ceremony, a meal and a few hours of celebration, all within one day or even a long afternoon.

Start with the legal ceremony, which usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. Then allow time for photographs, but keep them brief, perhaps 30 to 45 minutes, because you have fewer people to gather. Next comes the meal, which can be the heart of the day. A long lunch or dinner with toasts and speeches works well. After that, you might have cake cutting, a first dance or simply time to chat. Many micro weddings finish by early evening, but you can extend into the night if you wish. A sample schedule might be: 1pm ceremony, 1.30pm drinks and photos, 2.30pm wedding breakfast, 4.30pm speeches, 5pm cake, 5.30pm first dance, then relaxed mingling until 8pm. You do not need to fill every minute. Leave gaps for conversation and for the day to breathe. If you are having a religious ceremony, check with your place of worship for timings, and remember that in England and Wales you must give notice at least 28 days before, and in Scotland at least 29 days. For a civil ceremony, confirm with the registrar how long the legal part takes. You can also plan a short break between the ceremony and the meal if you want time alone together.
