How do I plan a wedding date?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Choose a date that works for you, your closest family and your venue. Check the legal notice periods first, then book your venue and registrar before telling everyone.

Start by thinking about the season you love and any dates that matter to you, like an anniversary. Then check the legal requirements for where you will marry. In England and Wales, you must give notice at least 28 full days before the ceremony, and the notice is valid for 12 months. In Scotland, give notice at least 29 days before, and registrars often advise 10 to 12 weeks. In Northern Ireland, give notice at least 28 days before. If either of you is subject to immigration control, the notice period can be longer. So choose a date that gives you enough time to give notice. Popular venues and registrars book up early, especially on Saturdays in summer. Ask your venue about availability before you fall in love with a date. Also check if your key guests, like parents or witnesses, can make it. If you want a religious ceremony, speak to your place of worship about banns or a licence, as rules vary. Once you have a shortlist, book the venue and registrar, then announce the date. If you are planning a wedding abroad, check the local rules and the GOV.UK page for that country, as legal recognition varies.
