How long should an engagement be in Islam?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

There is no fixed length for an Islamic engagement. It can last weeks, months or years, depending on the couple and their families. The engagement is a promise to marry, not a legal marriage, so the timing is flexible.

In Islam, an engagement, sometimes called a khitbah, is a commitment between two people and their families to marry. There is no rule in the Qur'an or hadith that sets a specific duration. The length is agreed by the couple and their families, and it varies widely across cultures and countries.

Some couples have a short engagement and marry within a few weeks. Others wait a year or more, especially if they want time to plan a wedding, complete studies, or save money. What matters is that both families are comfortable and that the couple are clear about their intentions.

During the engagement, the couple are not yet married under Islamic law, so they should follow the same rules of modesty and interaction as before. The engagement can be ended if either side changes their mind, though this should be done respectfully and with open communication.

For the wedding itself to be legally recognised in the UK, the nikah must take place in a building registered for marriages, with an authorised person present. If your nikah is held elsewhere, you may need a separate civil ceremony. Check with your mosque or imam and with GOV.UK to make sure your marriage is legal in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.
