How are wedding invitations supposed to be addressed?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Use full names and titles on the outer envelope, and first names or family names on the inner envelope. Write the recipient's name on the first line, then the street address, town, and postcode. For a family, name the adults on the outer envelope and children on the inner envelope.

The outer envelope is the formal one, so write the guest's full name and title, for example Mr James Smith, followed by their address. The inner envelope is more personal, so you can use first names only, or The Smith Family if you are inviting children. If you are using only one envelope, include everyone's names on the front, or write and family after the parents' names. For same-sex couples, use both names with the titles they prefer. For a single person, use their title and full name. For a couple with different surnames, write each name on a separate line. Always include the postcode on its own line, and write the town in capital letters if you like. If you are sending invitations by post, make sure the address is clear and the envelope is not too heavy. You can also hand-deliver invitations to close friends and family, but still use the same addressing style. The most important thing is that everyone knows exactly who is invited and feels respected.
