Short answer
Choose soft, flexible shoes with a secure fastening and a non-slip sole, and break them in before the big day so the child stays comfortable.
Comfort should come before style. A child who is unhappy in their shoes will spend the whole day telling you about it. Look for shoes made from soft material that do not rub the heel or pinch the toes. A wide toe box helps, and a low, stable heel or flat is best.
Fastenings matter more than you might think. Velcro straps or elasticated laces are easier for children to manage and stay secure. Avoid shoes that rely on tight buckles or thin ribbons that can come loose. Check the sole for grip so the child does not slip on polished floors or grass.
Break them in at home first. Let the child wear them for short periods on different surfaces, then gradually longer. This reveals any rubbing before the wedding. Pack a spare pair of soft trainers or plimsolls for dancing or when the feet get tired. A small blister plasters kit is also wise.
