Short answer
To make candles for your wedding, you need wax, wicks, a heatproof container, and a double boiler. Melt the wax, add colour or scent if you like, pour it into the container, and centre the wick. Let them set for 24 hours before trimming the wick.
Making your own candles is a lovely way to personalise your table décor, and it is simpler than you might think. You can use soy wax, beeswax, or paraffin, but soy is easy to work with and burns cleanly. You will also need wicks, wick stickers or glue, and containers such as jam jars, tea cups, or small tin pots.
Set up a double boiler by placing a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. Never melt wax directly on the hob. Cut the wax into small pieces and let it melt slowly, stirring occasionally. If you want colour, add a candle dye chip; for scent, use a candle-safe fragrance oil. Keep the temperature moderate, and do not overheat.
While the wax melts, stick the wick to the bottom of your container using a wick sticker. Pour the melted wax in slowly, leaving a little space at the top. Hold the wick upright with a pencil or a wick centring tool until the wax starts to set. Let the candles cool for at least 24 hours, then trim the wick to about a quarter of an inch.
Test one candle at home before the wedding to check the burn time and that the scent is not too strong. Make extra candles, as they are also lovely favours for guests to take home.
