Short answer
Wedding table plan etiquette is about making guests feel comfortable and included. Seat couples together, keep friends and family near people they know, and always show clear names and table numbers.
Etiquette for table plans is less strict than it used to be, but the golden rule is kindness. Seat guests with at least one person they know, and try to put them near others with similar interests or life stages. Couples usually sit together, but you can split them if they prefer. Do not seat divorced partners together unless they are happy about it. Ask your parents and wedding party if they have any seating requests or concerns before you finalise.
Place the top table facing the room, with the couple in the centre. You can include parents and the wedding party, or keep it to just the two of you. For other tables, aim for a mix of ages and backgrounds so conversations flow. Avoid seating anyone next to an ex, a difficult relative, or someone they have never met unless you are sure they will get on.
Make the plan easy to read. Use large, clear lettering and group names alphabetically by surname within each table. Put the plan where guests can see it as they enter the reception, and also list table numbers on place cards. If you have guests with visual impairments, consider a large-print version or a verbal announcement. The point is that everyone finds their seat without stress.
