What are typical sign sizes?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Typical wedding sign sizes range from A5 for small place cards to A1 for large welcome boards. A3 and A2 are the most common for directional signs and table plans. A0 is rarely needed unless the sign is outdoors or very far from guests.

Most wedding stationers offer signs in a few standard sizes. A5 and A6 are good for place cards, favour tags and small labels. A4 works for order of service booklets or single-page menus. A3 is a popular choice for directional signs, bar menus and small table plans. A2 is the go-to for welcome boards and seating charts, as it gives enough space for names and table numbers without being overwhelming. A1 is larger again, often used for grand entrance signs or outdoor displays where guests approach from a distance.

These sizes are based on the A-series paper system, which is standard in the UK. Each size is double the previous one, so A2 is twice the area of A3. That means you can scale your design up or down without losing proportion. Many printers can also cut or print custom sizes, such as 60 by 90 centimetres, if you prefer a different shape.

Think about the number of guests and the amount of text. A table plan for 150 guests with full names will need more space than one for 40 guests with first names only. If you are unsure, choose a size up from what you think you need. It is easier to make a sign slightly smaller than to squeeze in extra names.
