Who needs flowers at a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party

Short answer

No one strictly needs flowers at a wedding. The only essentials are the people, the legal paperwork, and your witnesses. Flowers are a lovely addition, but you can choose to have them only where they matter most to you.

Traditionally, flowers are given to the couple, the bridal party, and the parents, but that is not a rule. You can decide who carries or wears flowers based on your own preferences and budget. Many couples choose a bouquet for themselves, buttonholes for the wedding party, and a few table centres. Others skip flowers entirely and use candles, greenery, or paper decorations.

Think about where flowers will be seen and photographed. The ceremony arch, the aisle ends, and the top table are usually the most visible spots. You do not need flowers on every table or in every corner. If you want to include parents or grandparents, a simple buttonhole or a small wrist corsage is a kind gesture.

If you are having a religious ceremony, check with your place of worship about any rules on flowers. Some churches have restrictions on what can be placed near the altar. For a civil ceremony, the venue may have its own policy on confetti or loose petals. Always ask before you plan anything that might not be allowed.
