How many songs do you need for a wedding reception?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

You need roughly 90 to 120 songs for a typical four to five hour reception. That covers background music, dancing and gaps between courses. Plan for about 15 songs per hour of dancing, plus extra for dinner and mingling.

Think of your reception in blocks. For drinks and canapés, you might want 30 to 45 minutes of gentle background music. For a sit down meal, allow another 45 to 60 minutes. Then for the evening party, most couples dance for three to four hours, which works out at about 15 songs per hour.

That gives you a rough total of 90 to 120 songs. If you are using a DJ, they will usually have their own library and will read the room, so you do not need to hand over a full playlist. If you are making your own playlist for a speaker system, aim for at least 150 songs so you have plenty of choice and can skip any that fall flat.

Remember to include the first dance, the parent dances and any special moments like the cake cut. You can also ask guests for requests in advance. A good mix of genres and eras keeps everyone happy, from the youngest cousins to the grandparents. It is better to have too many songs than too few, because silence during a lull can feel awkward.
