Short answer
Start with your venue, your favourite season, and the colours you already love wearing. Narrow it down to two or three shades that work together and suit the setting.
Begin by thinking about the mood you want. Do you want calm and romantic, or bold and joyful? Your venue is the biggest clue. A grand hall with dark wood suits deep tones like forest green or burgundy. A bright barn or garden suits softer shades like sage, blush, or butter yellow. Then think about the season. Spring and summer call for lighter colours, while autumn and winter can take richer ones. Next, look at your own clothes and your home. The colours you are drawn to every day will feel natural on the day. Choose one main colour, one secondary colour, and one neutral. For example, main colour dusty blue, secondary blush, neutral ivory. Avoid choosing more than three, because it gets hard to keep everything coordinated. You can gather inspiration from flowers, stationery, or a favourite painting, but do not copy a whole scheme. Make it yours. If you are having a religious ceremony, check with your place of worship about any colour restrictions for flowers or decorations. For a civil ceremony, colours are flexible, but the registrar must approve any non-religious readings or songs. Once you have your palette, use it consistently on invitations, table settings, and signs.
