Can a Sikh wedding take place outside the gurdwara in the UK?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Yes, a Sikh wedding can take place outside the gurdwara in the UK, but the religious ceremony must follow Sikh tradition and the legal part must be registered separately. Check with your gurdwara and the register office for the rules.

Sikh weddings are traditionally held in a gurdwara, but there is growing flexibility for ceremonies in other locations. Some couples choose a garden, hotel or community hall for the Anand Karaj, especially if family and friends cannot travel to a gurdwara.

If you hold the religious ceremony outside, the granthi and ragis will still lead the hymns and laavan. The Guru Granth Sahib must be treated with respect, and a proper rumala and palki should be used. Some gurdwaras allow their granthi to travel, while others may require the ceremony to take place on their premises.

The legal side is separate. A Sikh ceremony outside a registered building is not automatically legally binding in the UK. You will need to complete a civil registration at a register office or an approved venue. This can happen before or after the religious service. Some couples do both on the same day, while others choose separate dates.

Talk to your granthi and your local register office early. They can explain what is allowed and help you plan a day that honours your faith and meets the law. Rules can vary, so confirm the details with your place of worship and the register office.
