Short answer
In the UK, a legal church wedding cannot take place outside. Church of England and Church in Wales weddings must happen inside the church building, and other registered religious buildings have the same rule. Outdoor ceremonies are not legally binding as church weddings.
For a legal church wedding in the UK, the ceremony must take place inside the church building. This applies to Church of England, Church in Wales and other religious buildings registered for marriages. The law does not allow a church wedding to be held outdoors, even within the church grounds. So if you dream of saying vows in a garden or under a tree, that cannot be your legal church ceremony.
That said, some couples choose to have a short blessing or prayer outdoors after the legal ceremony inside the church. This is not the legal marriage, but it can be a meaningful addition. You would need to ask the vicar or minister if they are happy to do this. Some are, some are not, so it is best to ask early.
If you want an outdoor legal wedding, you could consider a civil ceremony at an approved venue with outdoor space. Since 2022, approved venues in England and Wales can hold civil ceremonies outdoors within their grounds. In Scotland, weddings can take place almost anywhere agreed with the registrar or celebrant, indoors or outdoors. But a church wedding itself, as a legal event, must be inside the church. Check with your church and the register office for the current rules.
