What do Muslims do on their first night of marriage?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For grooms

Short answer

There is no single required ritual, but many couples spend time together in private, share a meal, pray together and read from the Quran. Families often visit the couple the next day.

The first night after a nikkah is a personal and private time for the couple. There is no single Islamic obligation for what you must do, but there are many recommended and customary practices. Many couples choose to eat together, as the Prophet Muhammad encouraged sharing food. Some pray a two-rak'ah prayer of gratitude together, and others read from the Quran or listen to a short talk.

If the couple has not yet spent time alone before the wedding, the first night is often when they begin to get to know each other as husband and wife. Kindness, patience and gentle conversation are valued. If either partner is shy or nervous, that is completely normal, and there is no rush.

In many families, relatives visit the newlyweds the following day to offer congratulations and share a meal. Some communities hold a small gathering or send gifts. If you have mixed-gender guests or cultural traditions, agree beforehand who will visit and when. Keep the first night low pressure, and remember that building a comfortable relationship takes time. If you have questions about specific practices, ask a trusted imam or an older married family member you respect.
