What is the etiquette for guests attending an interfaith wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Follow the dress code and any instructions your hosts give about modesty, head coverings or shoes. Ask the couple privately if you are unsure about a ritual you do not recognise.

Your main job is to be supportive and respectful. Read the invitation and any website notes for dress guidance, especially if the ceremony takes place in a place of worship. Some faiths ask guests to cover their heads, remove shoes or dress more conservatively than usual.

If you do not know what a ritual means, do not worry. Watch what others do and follow along. It is fine to stand, sit or bow with the group. If you are genuinely unsure, ask a member of the bridal party or a family member quietly before the ceremony starts.

Avoid commenting on the differences between the faiths during the event. Do not ask personal questions about beliefs in front of the couple. Your presence is the gift, and a warm smile is enough.

  • Arrive on time so you do not miss the start of the ceremony.
  • Keep your phone on silent and out of sight during the service.
  • Send a card or note afterwards thanking the couple for sharing their day.
