Short answer
An interfaith marriage is a union between partners of different religions or between a religious partner and a non-religious partner. In the UK it works by combining a meaningful ceremony with a legal registration that meets local rules.
An interfaith marriage brings together two different traditions, beliefs or no beliefs at all. It is not a single type of wedding. Some couples blend rituals from both families, others choose one tradition and add elements from the other, and some prefer a fully secular ceremony followed by a faith blessing.
The legal part is straightforward but must be handled carefully. In England and Wales you need to give notice at your local register office, wait the required period, and have a ceremony in a registered building or approved venue. A civil ceremony cannot include religious content such as hymns or prayers, so many couples hold a faith ceremony separately or arrange a civil registration first. Humanist ceremonies are not legally binding on their own here, so check the current position on GOV.UK.
Scotland and Northern Ireland have different rules. In Scotland, humanist and other belief celebrants can conduct legal weddings, and ceremonies can take place almost anywhere. In Northern Ireland, humanist weddings can be legally binding. Always confirm the details with your register office or place of worship before booking.
- Talk to both families early about which rituals matter most.
- Decide who will lead which parts of the ceremony.
- Plan how you will explain your choices to guests.
