Do Jewish people wear wedding rings and do men wear them too?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For grooms

Short answer

Yes, both partners exchange rings during the ceremony, and men wear wedding rings too. The groom traditionally places a plain gold ring on the bride's finger.

Ring exchange is a key part of a Jewish wedding. The groom places a plain, unadorned ring on the bride's right index finger, though customs vary and some couples now exchange rings with each other. The ring must be simple and owned by the groom, symbolising the seriousness of the commitment.

In many modern weddings, the bride also gives the groom a ring. This is not required by religious law but has become common practice. Some couples choose to wear their rings on the right hand during the ceremony and move them to the left hand afterwards, following local custom.

If you are a guest, you do not need to bring a ring. The couple arranges their own rings. If you are part of the wedding party, you may be asked to help hold the rings, but this is optional.

Customs differ between Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and secular communities. If you are planning your own wedding, discuss the ring exchange with your officiant or rabbi to match your beliefs.
