Do I need a tent for my outdoor wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

You do not need a tent for an outdoor wedding, but one protects you from rain and wind. It depends on the weather, your venue and how much comfort you want for your guests.

A tent is not a legal requirement, but it is often the most practical choice for a UK outdoor wedding. Rain can arrive without warning, and even a cloudy day can feel chilly once the sun goes down. Guests sitting on grass or in a sheltered garden may still be uncomfortable if the wind picks up.

Think about what you want the day to feel like. A marquee gives you a defined space for dining, dancing and a bar, and it keeps the ground dry underfoot. Without one, you may need to plan for covered seating areas, heaters and a wet-weather backup. Some couples choose a smaller tent for the ceremony and a larger one for the reception.

Check with your venue first. Some gardens, parks and estates have rules about where you can pitch a tent and how much weight it can carry. If you are using a registered venue for the legal part, make sure the outdoor area is approved for the ceremony.
