What marriages are not recognised in the UK?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

A marriage is not recognised in the UK if it was not legal where it took place, or if it breaks UK law such as involving someone under 18 or a close relative. Marriages abroad that are legal there are usually recognised, but check GOV.UK.

Most marriages performed abroad are recognised in the UK, as long as they were legal in the country where they happened. This covers civil ceremonies, religious weddings and humanist ceremonies, provided the local rules were followed.

There are key exceptions. A marriage that is not valid under the law of that country will not be recognised here. This includes ceremonies that lack the required legal formalities, such as a religious ceremony held without an authorised person or in a building not registered for marriages.

UK law also sets its own limits. Marriages involving anyone under 18 are not valid, since the minimum age is 18. Marriages between close relatives are not recognised. Bigamous marriages, where one partner is already married, are not valid either.

Some couples also have a ceremony that is meaningful to them but has no legal standing, such as a nikah held without the proper registration, or a humanist ceremony in England and Wales. These do not create a legal marriage on their own. Many couples handle this by adding a short civil ceremony at a register office or approved venue.

Rules can vary, especially for marriages abroad. Check GOV.UK, the register office or the place of worship for your situation.
