Which months are not good for marriage in 2026?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

No months are officially bad for marriage in the UK. Some couples avoid December due to holiday costs and travel, or August for peak prices. But legally, any month works, as long as you give notice in time.

There is no legal or universal rule against marrying in any month. However, practical factors might make some months less convenient. December is busy with parties, and venues and suppliers may charge more or be booked. August is peak holiday season, so guests may be away and travel costs higher. January and February can be cold and dark, but they often have more availability and lower prices. If you have a religious tradition, check with your place of worship, as some faiths avoid certain periods like Lent or Advent. Also consider your own guests: if many are teachers or parents, school holidays matter. If you want an outdoor ceremony, remember that since 2022 approved venues in England and Wales can hold civil ceremonies outdoors within their grounds, but weather is unpredictable. In Scotland, you can marry almost anywhere agreed with the registrar, so a rainy day might still work. The key is to give notice at least 28 days ahead (29 in Scotland), and to confirm your venue and registrar availability early. No month is cursed, but a little planning makes any month work.
