What to know before booking a wedding venue?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Before booking, confirm the venue is licensed for your type of ceremony, check its capacity and catering rules, read the contract carefully, and visit at the time of day you plan to marry. Ask about deposits, cancellation and insurance.

First, check the legal side. In England and Wales, a civil ceremony must happen at a register office, approved venue or registered religious building, and cannot include religious content. In Scotland, weddings can take place almost anywhere with a registrar or celebrant. In Northern Ireland, notice is given to the local registrar. If you plan a religious ceremony, check with your place of worship about banns or a licence. For any legal question, check GOV.UK or ask the venue directly.

Then look at the practical details. Confirm the venue can hold your guest count comfortably, both for the ceremony and the meal. Ask about catering: is it in-house or external, and can they meet dietary needs? Ask about drinks, corkage, and whether you can bring your own cake.

Read the contract before you pay anything. Look for payment schedules, cancellation terms, and what happens if the venue closes or you need to change the date. Ask about insurance, and whether the venue has public liability cover. Also ask about backup plans for bad weather if you want an outdoor element.

Finally, visit the venue at the time of day your wedding will take place. Check the light, noise and parking. Trust your instincts: if the staff are helpful and the contract is clear, that is a good sign.
