What is a typical wedding budget breakdown?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

A typical breakdown puts the venue and catering at roughly half of your total, with photography, attire, music, flowers, and stationery sharing the rest. But your own priorities should shape your split.

There is no fixed rule, but many couples find that the venue, food, and drink take up the largest slice, often around half of the budget. That includes the hire of the space, tables, chairs, linen, and the meal itself. After that, photography and videography usually take a meaningful share, followed by your outfits, rings, flowers, music, and transport. Smaller items like stationery, favours, hair and makeup, and legal fees fill the remainder. You can adjust this to suit you. If you want a live band, spend less on flowers. If you want a beautiful dress, choose a simpler menu. Always include the registrar or celebrant fees and any marriage notice costs. In Scotland, remember the registrar may charge for the ceremony and the notice. In England and Wales, check if your venue charges extra for an outdoor ceremony. Keep a list of every item and update it as you book. That way you always know where you stand.
