Should you use nicknames in your wedding website URL?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

You can use nicknames if they are the names everyone knows you by. But be careful: a nickname that only close friends use may confuse other guests. If in doubt, use your real names and save the nickname for the website content.

Nicknames can work well in a wedding website URL if they are widely recognised. If your family and friends already call you by those names, it feels friendly and personal. But think about every guest who will receive the address. Aunties, work colleagues and older relatives may not know that you are always called Bob or Lulu. If they cannot connect the nickname to you, they may struggle to find the site. A good compromise is to use your real names in the URL, then use nicknames on the website itself, like in the welcome message or your story page. That way everyone knows the site is for you, and the personal touch is still there. If you do use nicknames, make sure they are spelled the way people expect. Avoid inside jokes that only a few people understand. The URL should be easy to say and easy to share. You can always add your real names in brackets on the invitation, like "for Sam and Alex, visit samandalex.wedding". That helps everyone feel included. Remember, the URL is not the place for a private joke. Save that for the website content.
