How do I lace a wedding dress?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For brides

Short answer

Lace a wedding dress by threading the ribbon through the eyelets in a criss-cross pattern from bottom to top, then tie a bow at the waist or back. Pull evenly so the dress fits snugly but comfortably.

Start at the bottom of the corset or back panel and thread the ribbon through the lowest pair of eyelets, leaving equal lengths on both sides. Cross the ribbon over and thread it through the next pair of eyelets, working your way up. Pull each cross gently so the fabric lies flat and there are no twists. When you reach the top, bring the two ends together and tie a secure bow or knot, tucking any excess ribbon inside the dress.

If your dress has a lacing gap, aim for a neat, even opening. Ask someone to help you, as it is easier with two pairs of hands. Stand straight and breathe out as they tighten the laces. Avoid pulling too hard, as this can strain the fabric or the eyelets. If the ribbon is long, you can wrap the ends around your waist once before tying, or let them hang for a traditional look. Practise lacing the dress before the wedding so you know exactly how it feels and how long it takes.
