What is the difference between chapel length and cathedral length veils?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For brides

Short answer

Chapel length veils end at the floor and trail about a metre behind you, while cathedral length veils trail much further, often two metres or more. Cathedral veils are grander and suit formal ceremonies and long trains.

The main difference is the length of the train behind you. A chapel length veil reaches the floor and extends roughly one metre beyond your dress hem. It gives a classic, elegant look without being overwhelming, and it works well in most venues, including register offices, approved venues and churches. It is easier to manage on stairs, in narrow aisles and when you need to turn around.

A cathedral length veil is the longest and most dramatic option. It extends well beyond the dress, often two metres or more, and creates a sweeping effect as you walk. It suits very formal weddings, grand venues and dresses with long trains. It needs more space, so check your aisle width and whether the venue allows a long train. It can also be heavy, so make sure your hairstyle and comb can hold it securely.

Both lengths are fine for legal ceremonies across the UK. For a Church of England or Church in Wales wedding, the vicar may have practical advice about moving around, but there is no rule about veil length. If you are having a civil ceremony in England or Wales, the registrar will not comment on your veil, but do consider how you will walk and stand during the legal words.
