How long before your wedding should you do a hair trial?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For brides · For grooms

Short answer

Book your hair trial 4 to 8 weeks before the wedding. This gives you time to make changes, grow out or adjust any colour, and still have the trial fresh in your mind for the big day.

The ideal window for a hair trial is about a month to two months before your wedding. This timing works for several reasons. It is close enough that your hair length and colour will be similar to the day itself, but far enough that you have room to fix anything you do not like. If the style needs adjusting, you can book another trial or ask for tweaks. If you want to change your hair colour or cut, you have time to do that and then test the style again.

Doing the trial too early, say six months out, means your hair may grow or change, and you might forget the details. Doing it too late, like the week before, leaves no time for corrections. Also, your stylist will be in demand during peak wedding season, so booking early is wise. After the trial, write down what you discussed, including products used and any pins or accessories. Keep a photo on your phone. On the day, your stylist will appreciate the notes, and you will feel calm knowing the plan is set. If you are having a second trial, aim for two to three weeks before the wedding.
