Can I do my own wedding hair?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For brides

Short answer

Yes, you can do your own wedding hair, and many people do it successfully. The key is to practise several times before the day, use good products, and choose a style you can recreate under pressure. Allow extra time on the morning.

Doing your own wedding hair is a perfectly good option, especially if you are confident with styling or have a simple, natural look in mind. It saves you the cost of a stylist and means you have full control over the result. But it does take planning. Start by choosing a style that you have done before and that you know suits you. Avoid trying a brand new updo on the day. Practise it at least two or three times in the weeks before, and take photos from the front, side and back so you can see what it really looks like. Use the same products you will use on the day, so you know how they behave. On the morning, give yourself more time than you think you need. A good rule is to double your usual styling time. Set up a mirror in good light, and have all your tools and pins within reach. If you are also doing your own makeup, do that first or after, but leave a gap so you are not rushing. Consider asking a friend or bridesmaid to help with the back if your style is complex. And always have a few extra bobby pins and a small hairspray in your emergency kit.
