How long should a sherwani be?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For grooms

Short answer

A sherwani should end at the knee or just above it, with the front hem slightly shorter than the back. The sleeves should reach your wrist bone, and the collar should sit snugly at the neck without gaping.

The classic length for a sherwani is to the knee, so when you stand straight, the hem falls around the middle of your kneecap. Some modern cuts end a couple of inches above the knee, but anything shorter starts to look like a jacket rather than a sherwani. The back hem often has a slight tail, so it can be a touch longer than the front, which helps it sit well when you move.

Check the sleeve length carefully. The cuff should end at the base of your thumb, so about a centimetre of shirt cuff shows if you wear one. The shoulder seam should sit exactly at the edge of your shoulder, not drooping or pulling. The neck should be close but not tight, with room for one finger between collar and throat. When you try it on, raise your arms and sit down to make sure the length and armholes do not ride up. A good tailor will adjust the hem and sleeves, so buy your sherwani at least a month before the wedding to allow time for alterations.
