Do bridesmaid dresses need alterations?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For brides

Short answer

Most bridesmaid dresses need some alterations, even if they fit well. Hemming, taking in the waist or adjusting straps are common. Budget time and money for a local tailor, as off the rack dresses rarely fit perfectly without tweaks.

Very few bridesmaid dresses fit perfectly straight off the rack. Standard sizes are based on average proportions, so most people need at least a small adjustment. The most common alterations are hemming the length, taking in or letting out the sides, and adjusting shoulder straps or the bust area.

Start alterations early, ideally four to six weeks before the wedding. Ask each bridesmaid to bring the shoes she will wear on the day, so the hem can be set at the right length. A good tailor will also check the dress with the correct underwear and any shapewear.

If you are buying dresses online, factor in alteration costs and time. Some shops offer in house alterations, but a local independent tailor is often more flexible. Always have a fitting with the actual dress, not a sample, because fabrics and cuts differ. After alterations, ask each bridesmaid to do a full dress rehearsal, including sitting, walking and raising her arms, to make sure everything stays in place.
