Short answer
Send invitations 6 to 8 months in advance if many guests are travelling from abroad. They need time to arrange passports, visas, flights and accommodation. Send save the dates even earlier, around 12 months before, so they can plan and budget.
International guests face the biggest planning challenge. They may need to renew passports, apply for visas, book long haul flights and arrange extended time off work. Sending invitations 6 to 8 months ahead is the kind and practical approach.
If your wedding is during a peak travel season, such as summer or Christmas, aim for 8 months. If it is in a quieter month, 6 months may be enough. The earlier you send, the more likely they can attend.
You should send save the dates a full 12 months before, especially if you know who the international guests are. That gives them time to save money and request leave. It also lets them start visa applications, which can take several months.
Include a note with the invitation about the nearest international airport, and any advice about UK entry requirements. You can point them to GOV.UK for visa information, as rules can change. Also remind them to check their passport validity well in advance. For your own legal ceremony, check with your register office or place of worship, as notice periods can be longer if either of you is subject to immigration control.
