Invitations and stationery · When to send invitations

How far in advance should you send wedding invitations if you are having a destination wedding in the UK, like Scotland or Cornwall?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Send your invitations 6 to 8 months before a destination wedding in the UK. This gives guests time to arrange travel and accommodation. For a summer wedding in popular spots, aim for the longer end of that range.

For a destination wedding within the UK, such as in Scotland or Cornwall, send your invitations 6 to 8 months ahead. This is longer than the usual 3 to 4 months for a local wedding, because your guests will need to book travel and places to stay. If your wedding falls in peak holiday season or near a bank holiday, send them closer to 8 months out. That extra time helps guests who need to sort time off work or arrange childcare.

Before the invitations go out, you might send a save-the-date card or a quick message around 10 to 12 months ahead. That is not essential, but it is thoughtful for a destination wedding. It lets people plan early without committing them to the full invitation response.

Remember that your legal notice deadlines are separate. In Scotland, you must submit your marriage notice at least 29 days before the wedding, and registrars often advise 10 to 12 weeks. In England or Wales, notice is given at least 28 days before, and the ceremony must happen within 12 months of giving notice. So your invitation timeline and your legal paperwork timeline are different, but both need planning.

When you set your RSVP date, give guests at least 4 to 6 weeks after receiving the invitation. That gives them time to confirm travel plans and reply. You can then chase any late replies with a gentle reminder.
