How far in advance should you send wedding invitations for a holiday weekend wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

For a holiday weekend wedding, send invitations 5 to 6 months in advance. Guests need extra time to book time off, arrange travel and secure accommodation, as holiday weekends are popular and prices and availability change quickly. Earlier is always safer.

Holiday weekends in the UK, such as bank holidays, are prime time for weddings but also for other people's plans. Hotels, trains and car hire get booked up fast, and prices can rise. Sending invitations 5 to 6 months ahead gives your guests a real chance to sort things out without stress.

If you have many guests travelling from far away, or if your wedding is in a popular destination like the Lake District or Cornwall, aim for the 6 month end. If most guests are local, 5 months is usually enough.

You should also send save the dates even earlier, around 9 to 12 months before, especially for a bank holiday weekend. That way guests can block the date before making other plans.

Remember to set your RSVP date at least 8 weeks before the wedding, so you have time to confirm numbers. Also check with your venue about any minimum numbers or deadlines. For legal notice requirements, check with your register office or place of worship, as they can vary.
