How many seats does a 180cm dining table hold?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

A 180cm dining table usually holds six to eight people, depending on chair width and how tightly you seat them. For comfortable dining with elbow room, six is typical. For a tighter fit, eight guests can manage if the chairs are slim and you avoid large place settings.

A 180cm table is a common size for wedding breakfasts, and the number of guests you can seat depends on the chairs and the style of meal. With standard dining chairs and a plated meal, six people gives everyone comfortable space. If you use narrower chairs, or if guests are happy to sit a little closer, eight can work, but it will feel snug, especially with wine glasses, side plates and centrepieces.

For a formal seated dinner, allow about 60cm to 70cm per person. That means six guests is the comfortable maximum for a 180cm table. If you seat eight, you will be at around 45cm per person, which is tight but doable for a short reception. Think about the table shape too: a round table of 180cm diameter seats eight comfortably, but a rectangular 180cm table is different.

If you are mixing tables, check the actual table dimensions with your venue or hire company. Some 180cm tables are slightly longer or shorter. Also consider the legs: a central pedestal gives more legroom than four corner legs, which can make eight guests feel more cramped. For a relaxed, sociable feel, six is the safer choice.
