Is A2 big enough for a welcome sign?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

Yes, A2 is big enough for a welcome sign if your guests will read it from a few metres away. For larger venues or outdoor spaces, consider A1 or bigger so the text stays clear from a distance.

A2 measures 42 by 59.4 centimetres, which is roughly the size of a large poster. For most weddings, that works well for a welcome sign placed near the entrance, on an easel, or by the drinks table. Guests will typically walk past it within a metre or two, so A2 gives you enough space for your names, the date, and a short message like "Welcome to our wedding" or "Please take your seat".

If your venue has a long driveway, a big lawn, or a grand entrance hall, A2 might feel small. In that case, go up to A1 or even larger. The key is to think about where the sign will sit and how far away people will first see it. A good rule is to write your text in a font that is at least one centimetre tall for every metre of viewing distance. So if guests will see the sign from five metres away, your main text should be around five centimetres tall.

Also consider the frame or board you will mount it on. A2 is a standard size, so it is easy to find ready-made frames, clipboards, or acrylic holders. If you are printing at home, A2 is manageable on most large-format printers or at a print shop. For outdoor use, choose a weatherproof finish or place it under cover so the ink does not run.
