Short answer
The easiest and most affordable way to preserve flowers is to air dry them. Hang small bunches upside down in a dry, dark, well-ventilated space for two to three weeks. No equipment or special skills are needed.
Air drying works beautifully for most wedding flowers, especially roses, lavender, statice and gypsophila. Start by removing any damaged petals or leaves, then gather stems into small bunches of five or six. Secure each bunch with string or a rubber band, and hang them upside down so the stems stay straight and the petals keep their shape. Choose a spot that is dry, dark and airy, like a cupboard or a spare room. Direct sunlight will fade the colours, and damp air can cause mould.
Once the flowers feel crisp and papery, you can keep them as loose bunches, arrange them in a vase, or use them in a frame or shadow box. You can also press individual blooms between the pages of a heavy book, which is even simpler and works well for flat arrangements. Pressed flowers take about two to four weeks and are lovely for thank-you cards or keepsake bookmarks.
If you want to keep the bouquet whole, air drying is the gentlest method. Silica gel or resin preserve flowers more vividly, but they cost more and take more effort. For most couples, air drying gives a lovely, personal keepsake without any fuss. Just remember to start drying soon after the wedding, while the flowers are still fresh, and keep them away from humidity and strong light.
