When should you go on a honeymoon?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

Go when you both have the time and energy, often straight after the wedding or within a few months. The best time is whenever you can relax fully together.

There is no rule that says you must leave for your honeymoon the morning after the wedding. Many couples enjoy a few days at home first to rest, open cards and see family. Others head off immediately while the excitement is high and annual leave is already booked.

Think about your work calendars, your budget and how much planning you have left. If you are exhausted, a short local break now and a longer trip later can work well. Some couples delay the big honeymoon for months, sometimes until an anniversary or a better season for their chosen destination.

If you marry abroad, you might already be in a lovely place, so staying on for a few nights can be simple and calm. If you marry in winter and dream of sun, waiting until spring or summer might suit you better.

The key is to choose a time when you are not rushing, not worried about money and not tired out. A honeymoon should feel like a pause, not another deadline. Talk honestly about what you both want, and book time off as soon as you can so you have something to look forward to.
